Poet Statement
Poetry is a second diary for me. My poetry is about whatever my feelings are, or once were, at a specific point in time. Poetry is an outlet for me when I feel visual art cannot do my feelings justice. Even if I am given a prompt, I have made it a personal obligation to somehow connect it back to my past, present, or future selves. Whatever the case, my poetry, in a nutshell, is who I am or wish to be. Many times, as I have been told, my poetry can be seen as letters. Whether it's to the person it's about or just to myself, it seems to be pointing somewhere. I also find myself constantly writing about the home and my relationship with that word. I believe that the definition of "home" is fluid and changes depending on the circumstance. Due to past events in my life, I have tried to figure out the word and what it means to truly be home. I'm still attempting to learn.
Lately, I've found myself working with different styles as I explore both historical and contemporary writers (currently, Robert Frost and Rupi Kaur). I've also had many challenges from club assignments and friends. Right now, I am attempting to work on not being so direct with pronouns, and I am also trying to include more nature-themed metaphors into each poem. Particularly, I enjoy writing about the sky, stars, mountains, trees, wild animals, etc. because I find myself relating to each of these often and they calm me. Many of my fellow club members have furthermore inspired me to play with capitalization, formatting, line breaks, and punctuation. This, to me, has been the most fun to fool around with since it can be read so differently due to these things.
Lastly, some of my favorite lines of my poetry come from random dreams. There have been many dreams where as soon as I wake up, I write down the line or stanza and create a poem from whatever I wrote down. Those poems have ended up being some of my personal favorites; two examples would be Bricks and Bricks II.
